Enjoy Consevation Dolphins in Bali

Bali Exotic Marine Park is one of the locations that shows concern for marine animals, especially dolphins in Bali. That’s why we founded Bali Exotic Marine Park (BEMP) by being able to provide education and conservation to visitors who come to watch dolphins in Bali.

Starting to work since 2019, BEMP has slowly become one of the best places to watch and swim with dolphins in Bali. Bali Exotic Marine Park itself wants to make BALI the center of dolphin conservation in Indonesia.

To get to the BEMP location, it’s actually not difficult to find it. Because it is close to Kuta and Nusa Dua. You just have to enter the Pedungan area on the road towards the Bali Mandara Toll Road. But the BEMP location is in a place before the Bali Mandara Toll Road. So please see the Bali Exotic Marine Park sign if you are coming from Pesanggaran, because the location is on the left. But if you come from the toll road, the location is on the right side of the road.

What Makes Dolphins Look So Amazing?

Dolphins are known as one of the most intelligent animals in the world. These marine mammals have complex and fascinating personalities to explore. The following article will discuss various factors of dolphin personality, starting from intelligence, social behavior, to their amazing communication skills.

Understanding Dolphin Personality

Dolphin personality refers to a consistent and unique pattern of behavior, emotions, and cognition in this species. This includes how they relate to their environment, other dolphins, and humans. Dolphin personality is created from a combination of genetic factors and their life experiences in the ocean.

Several researchers have identified several personality traits specific to dolphins, including:

  • Higher intelligence and learning ability
  • Social and social nature
  • Greater curiosity
  • Ability to have empathy
  • Playfulness
  • Good adaptability

These personalities make dolphins fascinating animals to study. They show behavioral complexity similar to primates and humans in several respects.

The Amazing Intelligence of Dolphins

One of the most striking aspects of the Bali dolphin personality is their incredible intelligence. Some interesting evidence of dolphin intelligence:

  • Have larger brains relative to their body size
  • Able to solve complex problems and use tools
  • Have good learning and memory abilities
  • Can recognize ourselves in the mirror (self-awareness)
  • Understand simple language syntax

Dolphin intelligence is evident in their ability to solve puzzles, use sea sponges as tools to find food, and make air bubbles in the form of rings for play. They are able to understand gestures and symbols given by humans.

Research shows that dolphins have a very high “encephalization quotient” (EQ) or ratio of brain size to body size, only slightly lower than humans. This explains their great cognitive abilities.

Complex Social Behavior

Dolphins are known to be social animals. They live in groups called pods, which can number up to several hundred individuals. Their social behavior is extremely complex and similar to primates in several ways:

  • Forming strong, enduring social bonds
  • Having a hierarchical social structure
  • Cooperating in hunting and protecting the group
  • Showing altruistic behavior (helping others)
  • Playing and socializing for pleasure

Dolphins even have their own “names” in the form of distinctive whistles that they use to identify themselves. They can remember and recognize the whistles of other individuals even after years of separation.

This complex social behavior suggests a high level of emotional and social intelligence in dolphins. They are able to form friendships, resolve disputes, and show empathy for injured or sick individuals.

3 Unique Learning Information You Can Learn from Dolphins in Bali

  1. Unique Way of Talking

Similar to bats, dolphins have a biological sonar called echolocation. This tool is able to find out various things in its environment by emitting low or high sound frequencies and distinctive and unique vocal sounds. The frequency can be used to find out the size of an object, direction of travel, density, and position of an object. In other words, even though dolphins’ vision is limited when underwater, they can still find food and avoid danger with the sonar.

In addition to speaking through echolocation, dolphins in Bali can also do body language, you know, such as wagging their tails and fins as if hitting the water, jumping out of the water, and sky hopping. Well, the unique thing is, almost the same as humans, dolphins talk through physical fights. The stubborn clash of heads indicates an aggressive signal that dolphins use to fend off other males during mating. On the other hand, gentle bumps and fin touches are signs of affection.

  1. Technically, Dolphins Never Sleep

As mammals that breathe with lungs, dolphins must take in air every so often. This makes dolphins “unable to sleep” because they could drown. Dolphins and other cetaceans, such as whales, have made a great adaptation by turning off some of their brain functions.

Technically, when the brain function of the Bali dolphins drops to 50%, they close some of their eyes and leave the others open to detect danger. When together, they rest part of their body, but are still aware of what is happening around them. Unlike other living creatures in the world, sleeping dolphins can still control their movements, swim slowly, get air, and scan their surroundings for terror.

  1. Dolphins Bitten by Sharks?

Dolphins have amazing regenerative powers. In fact, they don’t worry if their bodies are bitten and torn by sharks. Some wounds in the body of the dolphin will heal only a few weeks. Some of these wounds are rarely affected and will only leave minor injuries. When some researchers observed the reaction of dolphins when bitten by sharks, injured dolphins showed no signs of discomfort. Do they have natural anesthesia, huh?
